Until she starts having dreams about a girl named Jo. Every night at the same time—3:59 a.m.
Jo's life is everything Josie wants: she's popular, her parents are happily married, and Nick adores her. It all seems real, but they're just dreams, right? Josie thinks so, until she wakes one night to a shadowy image of herself in the bedroom mirror – Jo.
Josie and Jo realize that they are doppelgängers living in parallel universes that overlap every twelve hours at exactly 3:59. Fascinated by Jo's perfect world, Josie jumps at the chance to jump through the portal and switch places for a day.
But Jo’s world is far from perfect. Not only is Nick not Jo's boyfriend, he hates her. Jo's mom is missing, possibly insane. And at night, shadowy creatures feed on human flesh.
By the end of the day, Josie is desperate to return to her own life. But there’s a problem: Jo has sealed the portal, trapping Josie in this dangerous world. Can she figure out a way home before it’s too late?
Wow, just wow. This is my first Gretchen McNeil read, but it sure won't be my last!
I have to admit, in the beginning I wasn't very much into this book. The description reminded me alot of Unraveling. Because of the whole alternate universe? However, it has very many different factors in 3: 59, and I really ended up enjoying this book because of that.
Firstly, I really liked Josie, at least when I compared her to Jo, who is kind of a bitch in the majority of the book. She was a pretty smart girl( I wished she would have used her senses a little bit more, perhaps), she was nice, and she was caring. She had alot of qualities in a main character that I almost always love. At times, I really did want to punch her, but I think authors just want me to feel this way.
The romance in this book was surprisingly light. It was always there, but it never really came out until the end-ish area. And let me talk to you about Nick( and I can't tell you which Nick either). He was so, so sweet. Well, definitely not at first, but later..."swoon". He just left me feeling all gushy and warm inside!
My favorite part of this book was the plot. McNeil has the skill to keep me on edge all the time. Literally. After page 200, I could not stop reading this book. The book seemed slow to start, at least for me, but then it all of a sudden got soooo good. The other universe was wicked cool( I really just said that). I will say it has human-eating-monsters that I loved, because it is what kept me hiding my eyes at certain parts. And some of the other characters in the alternate universe, were evil I say! Not at first, but they certainly changed my mind later in the novel. It seemed I got most of the characters wrong at first. "sign"
The ending seemed very open-ended, which makes me wonder if there will be a sequel. It wasn't an ending where I was really pissed at the author for making it end there, but it definitely left me curious.
